ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE & KODAK ANNOUNCE INAUGURAL “REEL FILM DAY”

March 5th marks first-ever nationwide celebration of 35mm with film screenings at independent cinemas across the country and exclusive Mondo merchandise with proceeds benefitting film preservation efforts

Austin, TX – February 16, 2017 – Mark your calendars, cinephiles. 35mm film will be alive in all its glory on March 5 — or 3.5. A collaborative initiative from Alamo Drafthouse and Kodak, the first-ever “Reel Film Day” will champion the beauty of cinema’s richest and most enduring format with celebratory screenings at Alamo Drafthouse and independent theaters across the U.S.

“There is nothing like experiencing actual 35mm projected film,” said Steve Bellamy President of Kodak Motion Picture and Entertainment. “I don’t care if it is the greatest 8K projector in the world,35mm is a radically different thing and there is simply no comparison. Projected film is watching light blast through dozens of layers of color dye clouds and emulsion, 24 times per second. A film projectionist is a master craftsman and seeing his or her work is akin to performance art. While the world has largely migrated to the utility of video projectors, there is a massive growth in consumers who understand the experience of film projection. This is why theatres projecting film are coming back so strongly and doing so well!”

As a true celebration of the wide-ranging scope of cinema, Reel Film Day programming will be deeply eclectic, featuring classics including Powell and Pressburger’s THE RED SHOES and Orson Welles’ A TOUCH OF EVIL rubbing reels with cult favorites like BUCKAROO BANZAI and Quentin Tarantino’s INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. At press time over 25 screenings are taking place, and it is expected that ultimately hundreds of theaters across the country will join in. No matter the location, the unifying factor is that all films will be presented large and lustrous from 35mm film.

“Less than 5% of our film history exists in a high-definition digital format,” says Alamo Drafthouse CEO and Founder Tim League. “If you really love film, then join us to recognize, celebrate and support film screenings in independent theaters everywhere. This scrappy group of fellow cinephiles is truly preserving film history. Support your local theater, support 35mm (and 70mm) film on 3/5, the first annual Reel Film Day.”

For those looking for a marquee-level display of their devotion to 35mm film exhibition, acclaimed art boutique Mondo has created an exclusive line of T-shirts and enamel pins to mark the day. Merchandise will be on sale starting 3.5 at mondotees.com/collections/reel-film-day.

The KODAK Reel Film App, a free smartphone tool for moviegoers, will provide quick access to information about movies being projected on real film, show times, images, summaries and theater locations.

Finally, to fully realize the day’s efforts to keep 35mm alive, $3.50 from tickets to all of the 35mm screenings at Alamo Drafthouse locations and select partner venues, as well as a portion of the proceeds from Mondo’s sales, will be donated to the prestigious Film Foundation to help fund an upcoming important film preservation effort.

Introducing New “Alamo For All” Sensory Family Screenings

INTRODUCING NEW “ALAMO FOR ALL” SENSORY FRIENDLY SCREENINGS

“Baby Day” grows up into a new all-ages format designed to better accommodate both parents with infants and guests with special sensory needs

(Austin, TX | October 25, 2016) – Alamo Drafthouse prides itself on providing a moviegoing experience free of disruptions, built on a policy of zero tolerance for talking and texting in its theaters. However, Alamo Drafthouse also prides itself on being an inclusive, welcoming environment for all in the community and recognizes that some guests — like parents with infants and those with autism — need just a bit of leeway when it comes to these rules. Alamo Drafthouse has long offered designated “Baby Day” screenings on weekdays for parents with infants to enjoy the moviegoing experience and allow babies to be, well, babies. Now, Alamo Drafthouse is pleased to announce it’s expanding the scope of this popular program to welcome and accommodate guests with autism and other special sensory needs, too — while also helping to better fit the schedules of working parents.

The new “Alamo for All” are sensory friendly screenings open to all ages, including infants. Like its “Baby Day” predecessor, at these specially designated screenings the house lights are left a little brighter and the sound is turned down a little lower. The feature film will run without the Alamo Drafthouse’s signature preshow and without trailers. Moving around the theater and noise will be allowed. Alamo Drafthouse’s normally strict rule against latecomers will also be relaxed at these screenings. The use of cell phones or other devices, however, will still be discouraged.

And, working parents rejoice: “Alamo for All” screenings will be found not just on weekdays, but on weekend mornings as well.

“We heard from parents, and the resounding comment was one ‘Baby Day’ a week wasn’t enough,” says Amy Averett, Alamo Drafthouse Director of Family and Community Engagement. “‘Alamo for All’ screenings are for anyone who wants to enjoy a day at the movies and great Alamo Drafthouse food and beverage but needs a little wiggle room on our regular policies.  Truly, everyone is welcome,” says Averett.

Finding a sensory friendly screening at Alamo Drafthouse and planning your next trip will also be much easier, thanks to a new page on the Alamo Drafthouse’s website — drafthouse.com/alamoforall — where guests can find an up-to-the-minute list of screenings in their area as well as full details on sensory friendly policies. The page will also link to upcoming Open Caption screenings for hearing impaired guests.

The launch of “Alamo for All” also comes with a new, clarified approach to the Alamo Drafthouse’s “No Talking” policy, ensuring that guests with autism or other needs who are not able to strictly adhere to the rules are given a bit of leeway — not just at sensory friendly screenings, but at ALL Alamo Drafthouse shows.

“We strive to be a fully inclusive environment. ANYONE should be able to set foot in an Alamo Drafthouse and feel welcomed, comfortable and a part of the family,” says Alamo Drafthouse CEO and Founder Tim League.  “Our policies are not designed to exclude or alienate; rather, they’ve always been intended to curb blatantly rude behavior.”

About Alamo Drafthouse

Tim and Karrie League founded Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in 1997 as a single-screen mom and pop repertory theater in Austin.  Nineteen years later, the now 24-location chain has been named “the best theater in America” by Entertainment Weekly and “the best theater in the world” by Wired. The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has built a reputation as a movie lover’s oasis not only by combining food and drink service with the movie-going experience, but also introducing unique programming and high-profile, star studded special events. Alamo Drafthouse Founder & CEO, Tim League, created Fantastic Fest, a world renowned film festival dubbed “The Geek Telluride” by Variety. Fantastic Fest showcases eight days of genre cinema from independents, international filmmakers and major Hollywood studios. The Alamo Drafthouse’s collectible art gallery, Mondo, offers breathtaking, original products featuring designs from world-famous artists based on licenses for popular TV and Movie properties including Star Wars, Star Trek & Universal Monsters. The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is expanding its brand in new and exciting ways, including Drafthouse Films, founded in 2010, which has already garnered three Academy Award nominations and Birth.Movies.Death., an entertainment content platform for movie lovers and the pop culture obsessed.

Alamo Drafthouse Idiocracy 10th Anniversary Screenings

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE AND ART HOUSE CONVERGENCE

GOT WHAT AMERICA CRAVES

Reunion of Cast & Filmmakers to Mark the 10th Anniversary of IDIOCRACY with Screenings Nationwide, Worldwide Livestream Q&A and Voter Registration Drive

(September 21, Los Angeles, CA) Ten years ago, satirist Mike Judge told of an impossible future in which our collective intelligence had dropped so low it threatened to destroy the world. In this future, America was run by a corrupt, sociopathic former pro-wrestler with severe anger management issues, and the most popular entertainment in the land was a YouTube-esque video playlist called “Ow My Balls.”

Flash forward to today. We are approaching the end of the most bizarre, absurdist presidential race in U.S. history. Over the past months, thousands have questioned in social media whether IDIOCRACY was actually a documentary. Mike Judge’s sadly prescient film has transcended its cult classic status to become a vibrant and essential facet of this election conversation.

The Alamo Drafthouse, along with the network of Art House Convergence Theaters and local League of Women Voters chapters, want to invite everyone to revisit and rediscover IDIOCRACY on the eve of the 2016 presidential election.

Members of the cast and crew of IDIOCRACY will be live in person at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica at 6:45pm on October 4th for a screening of the film and a post-movie conversation.

Concurrent IDIOCRACY screenings will also take place at Alamo Drafthouse locations and Art House Convergence theaters across the country and the post-movie conversation will be live-streamed to those audiences.

For those that can’t make it to an Alamo Drafthouse or Art House Convergence theater, fear not, you can still join in the fun. Watch the film from your own DVD, from Amazon, iTunes or the platform of your choice.  Press play exactly at 7:00pm Pacific Standard Time, and then tune into Facebook Live from facebook.com/alamodrafthouse for the post-movie conversation at 8:25pm PST.

Questions will be taken from the live audience in Santa Monica, but also from the live-stream and Facebook Live audiences via Twitter using the hashtag #IdiocracyToday.

In attendance at the event will be director and writer Mike Judge and star Maya Rudolph.

Also, the Alamo Drafthouse’s collectible art gallery Mondo is creating a licensed IDIOCRACY shirt for the occasion. It will be available on mondotees.com. A portion of proceeds from merchandise and participating screenings will be donated to local League of Women Voters chapters to support their non-partisan efforts to register and educate voters.

Whether you are voting for Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Jill Stein, Gary Johnson, or whether you just want to cast a write-in vote for Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho, these options are all your right — but first you must register to vote!

“If we learn one thing from this election cycle,” says Alamo Founder and CEO Tim League, “it’s that to truly be an American one must register to vote, join the debate and participate in democracy.”

July 2016 at the Alamo Drafthouse

This July, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Littleton is diving straight into summer with the Kids Camp series, weekly screenings that are pick-your-price ($1 – $3) with 100% of ticket sales donated to local nonprofits and schools. The series boasts titles including The Boxtrolls, The Neverending Story, Horton Hears a Who! and Babe. Tickets are on sale now at www.drafthouse.com/denver.

In an effort to welcome guests and families living with autism or special needs, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has developed Sensory Friendly screenings. These screenings are similar to Baby Day screenings (for parents with infants) where the lights in the theater are slightly turned up, the sound is turned down, no previews or advertisements are shown and the “no talking” policy is relaxed. Upcoming Sensory Friendly screenings include The BFG, The Secret Life of Pets, Ice Age: Collision Course.

On Monday, July 18, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema welcomes back the Demon Dog of American Literature, James Ellroy, as he presents the original Cape Fear and chats with guests after the screening in Glass Half Full. The following week, director Rachel Talalay will present her cult classic, post-apocalyptic Tank Girl in 35mm. Chef Seth Rexroad created a special three-course dinner with Ska Brewing Co. beer pairings for the event.
