Well, it’s been like two weeks since Filmsplosion 2024 was released. Have you finished listening to it yet? If not, don’t read the rest of this post, as we’ll be looking at all the Nerds’ Top 10 lists.

As is tradition, I assigned every movie a scored based on where it was on a Nerd’s list. If it was their #1 film, I gave it 10 points; if #2, 9 points; and so on until our #10 films received 1 point each. If it was one of the eight films that appeared on more than one list, then it has a combined score.

(Hard to believe, but I’ve now done this five years running: Filmsplosion 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.)

Now, we’ll get to which movies had the highest average score, but first, we’ll look at the movies that scored the highest overall.

Here are the HIGHEST SCORED MOVIES of Filmsplosion 2024:

  1. Wicked – 19
  2. Deadpool & Wolverine – 18
  3. Hundreds of Beavers – 14
  4. Inside Out 2 – 12
  5. TIE: Conclave, The Substance, In A Violent Nature*, Late Night with the Devil* – 10
  6. The Fall Guy – 8

The asterisk denotes that each was #1 on an individual Nerd’s list, thus earning 10 points via one individual.

As Brad noted as we were starting Filmsplosion 2024, there wasn’t a lot of crossover this year. We only had seven movies that appeared on multiple Nerds’ lists.

Unsurprisingly, if we look at these films’ average scores (total score divided by number of lists it appeared on), the order is a bit different.

THE AVERAGE SCORES for the four highest-scoring movies:

  1. Deadpool & Wolverine – 9
  2. Hundreds of Beavers – 7
  3. Wicked – 6.3
  4. Inside Out 2 – 6
  5. TIE: Conclave, The Substance – 5
  6. The Fall Guy – 4

Weirdly, Ryan putting Wicked at his #8 spot was the boost it needed to get over Deadpool & Wolverine in the overall point total. But, by only putting it at #8, he basically sandbagged it so that his and Brad’s Deadpool & Wolverine and Hundreds of Beavers picks would have the higher average scores. I see how it is, Ryan. *evil glare*

Wicked Oscars sweep, baby!! LFG!

Now, looking at the 10 highest-grossing movies of 2024, in terms of domestic box office, the Top 3 appeared on multiple lists: Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine and Wicked. Dune: Part Two, which was #7 at the domestic box office, also appeared on my list.

Looking at #11-20 for the domestic box office, three more of our choices appear. Zach had the “Apes” movie, which was #12; I had Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (#14) and the Wild Robot (#16). But that, was it.

Honestly, it felt like a really slow year for movies, particularly the first half of the year. I know Hollywood was still recovering from last year’s strikes, but goodness, it really wasn’t the best year for movies outside of November and December where had Wicked, Gladiator II, Moana 2, Sonic 3 and Mufasa in quick succession.

Even Brad and Ryan, who went to the movies every week this year, said the first half of the year was generally slow and dull. Thus, they said, Deadpool & Wolverine in July really felt like a shot in the arm.

And finally, as usual, I wanted to examine our Filmsplosion picks by genre. How many action movies do we have? How many dramas? Super-hero flicks? etc.

So, for this assessment, I went by each film’s most basic genre. The five main categories are: animation, action, comedy, drama, horror. Of note, we also have one-off genres of musical, superhero and documentary.

By the way, I’m generalizing which category it’s in based on my own experience in either seeing the movie or watching the trailer, and most were pretty straightforward to categorize. In the few cases where I was uncertain, I went by which genre was listed first on its IMDB page.

So, without further ado, let’s look at the BREAKDOWN OF THE FILMSPLOSION LISTS BY GENRE:

  1. Horror (8)
  2. Comedy (7)
  3. Animation (6)
  4. Action (5*)
  5. Drama (4)
If Wicked doesn’t sweep the Oscars, I hope Conclave does.

If you listened to the full Filmsplosion episode, it won’t be a shock that Horror took the top spot this year. It felt like every other movie on Ryan’s list and pretty much everything on Zach’s was a Horror movie.

However, I was actually surprised by how close Comedy was this year. I didn’t realize until going back through everyone’s list just how many Comedies we had, considering how it felt so lopsided in favor of Horror.

Also, after reigning supreme for four years, Drama continued its descent. Last year, it fell off the podium. This year, it’s all the way at the bottom. And two of the four Dramas were mine! Go figure…

Technically, Action should be at the bottom, tied with Drama. However, because we didn’t have a real Superhero category this year, I rolled Deadpool & Wolverine into Action. Hence the asterisk.

Speaking of which … we’ve gone two consecutive lists with only one Superhero entry. Last year, we technically had two, but I counted Spider-Verse as animation. But, this year, we really and truly only have one Superhero entry.

It’s interesting to see the genre that once did so well and took up so much real estate on the Nerds’ list has basically disappeared. I realize the only MCU movie in 2024 was Deadpool & Wolverine, and I don’t think DC released anything except Joker 2. Remember when people thought that movie was going to be good? LOL

I noted the decline in Superhero entries on our list in 2022:

After reigning supreme for so many years, the MCU has definitely taken a tumble in our esteem, it seems. No Multiverse of Madness from Ryan and no Thor: Love & Thunder from anyone… which, sadly makes a lot of sense. We’ll see if Superhero does better at Filmsplosion 2023, as we’ve got Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, Shazam 2, The Flash and others dropping this year.

Show Time: A Statistical Recap of Filmsplosion 2022
Ryan and Brad are gonna give me shit, but I didn’t see this movie. *shrugs*

This year, we’re getting at least four Superhero films: Captain America 4, Thunderbolts, Superman and Fantastic Four. I actually think there’s a decent chance we’ll have two or more will make our lists next year, but I highly doubt all four of them will.

Still, I’m interested to see if the Superhero genre has any kind of resurgence, whether on our Filmsplosion lists or in pop culture. People have been decrying “the death of the MCU” or “the death of superhero movies” for months if not years at this point, and I do think there’s some truth to it. But, perhaps we all needed a year or two just to reset, and the genre will be back with a vengeance… or not. We will see.

Anyway, that’s basically all I’ve got for A Statistical Recap of Filmsplosion 2025!

Thanks to Brad, I put all everyone’s lists below so you can see for yourselves which genre I slated for them. As always, it’s interesting to see how everyone’s lists look by genre, as some Nerds lean heavily one way and others, another. This year, there were several entries where I didn’t have to change the genre from last year’s entry, just the movie title. LOL
