Awards 2017 Fantasy Movie League – Week 3

I don’t know where to begin this week except with that Moana being the Best Performer was out of left field to all of us except for Movies After Ass who, finally set a lineup after however long, set at least one screen of it in his lineup. It didn’t change his fortunes, but he’s gaining ground. Meanwhile, the rest of the Reel Nerds league rested on Rogue One and whether to play a Friday screen or combine Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday/Sunday combo prevailed, flipping last week’s top three teams to the bottom and sending Doctor Acula’s Movie Funhouse to victory, yet again with Arrival in play. Playing Arrival also helped boost Detonatormonkey to second place, with Tyler Perry’s A Medea Cineplex taking third.

Overall, there’s not much separation for our teams, so each week is still anybody’s game. With Rogue One holding over predictably large numbers and releases like Sing, Passengers, and Assassin’s Creed entering the mix, it’s going to me more difficult to pick a lineup next week.

Awards 2017 Fantasy Movie League – Week 2

It was supposed to be one of the more difficult weeks to predict but two teams managed to find the Perfect Cinema. ColoRadJoe and Radley Cinemas expected the expansion of Nocturnal Animals to do well, and it did, becoming the Best Performer of the week. However, ColoRadJoe claims the official win because he finalized his lineup sooner. When approached for comment, Radley Cinemas stated, “This is bullshit!” and stormed off. Doctor Acula’s Movie Funhouse’s strategy of not changing his lineup has come to an end, down in the basement.

Next week, Rogue One pricing will be split into three separate days. Will it be better to play only Friday? Or Double up with Saturday and Sunday? It all depends on the FML pricing gods.

Awards 2017 Fantasy Movie League – Week 1

It’s time to embark on another thirteen weeks of box office hypothesis! The Awards 2017 season begins now!

Sadly, the Reel Nerds Podcast league lost a member this week when Jason’s Farthouse Cineplex shuttered its stinky, elitist doors. Too bad, but more American money for the rest of us!

Apparently, historically, the week after Thanksgiving sees a dive in box office returns, however, The Edge of Seventeen saw a better than expected bump, making it this week’s BP. Unfortunately, no one in this league played it, which is why without that advantage, all our teams hovered around the same total. A PC of 1x Moana, 3x Arrival, 4x Edge would have netted you $69,504,808.

ColoRadJoe claims the first win of the season, while Doctor Acula’s Movie Funhouse claims 2nd despite not changing his lineup for the third week in a row. Fall Champion Radley Cinemas starts this season in 3rd after foolishly believing in Allied while PeterParker, again, begins on the wrong foot, this time leaning on Doctor Strange. He’d almost be last if not for Movies After Ass who apparently is chasing another bag of tacos.

FML Awards Week 1

Fall 2016 Fantasy Movie League – Week 13 Conclusion!

With the Thanksgiving holiday in play and opening days set outside the FSS weekend, it was tricky to plan your lineup around what would be the falloff totals for the week. Moana set records out of the gate, but dipped considerably by the weekend, the three days that mattered to players. With its expensive price tag, it wasn’t worth the play. Probably the difference maker was Arrival’s strong hold in its third week. Mid-weekend, Almost Christmas led for Best Performer but that might have been a reporting error. Either way, it too held well and messed with the standings for a few hours.

With the final results in, Radley Cinemas is the winner of the Reel Nerds Podcast Fall 2016 League! For the second consecutive week, he managed the Perfect Cinema, this week being: 3x Doctor Strange and 5x Arrival (also the Best Performer) with a final season gross of $1,138,364,647! The Nerdy will grace his shelf for the next 13 weeks.

ColoRadJoe and Jason’s Farthouse Cineplex join him in the Billion Dollar Cineplex club after a close fought season at 2nd & 3rd place.

Despite stumbling to start the season, PeterParker climbed his way to 4th Place to finish, followed close in 5th by Doctor Acula’s Movie Funhouse who didn’t change his lineup at all from last week and scored 2nd place for Week 13.

Detonatormonkey was not far behind this pack in 6th, and little farther back is mid-season addition Tyler Perry’s A Medea Cineplex in 7th not having played all the weeks. Lastly, Movies After Ass is our league Taco having disappeared since week… whatever. Hopefully the consolation prize of actual tacos will bring him back to play the winter season.

Hopefully everyone had fun will return for another 13 weeks that’ll include what will surely be a crazy Rogue One release and a chance to wrestle the Nerdy from Brad’s cold, dead hands!

Fall 2016 Fantasy Movie League – Week 12 Recap

Here we are, nearly at the end of the season. Next week will decide the Fall 2016 Reel Nerds Podcast League Champion! And currently it looks like it’s Radley Cinemas’ to lose…

While the past few weeks saw better than expected returns, something about the release of Fantastic Beasts had a very negative effect on the rest of box office, while it itself performed better than everything else by a wide margin, it still came in slightly below industry predictions. Meanwhile, all the other newcomers like Edge of Seventeen and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk crashed out of the gate and crippled two teams. Four teams with different arrangements came in with very close totals to each other, three teams relying heavily on Arrival and variances made by one or two screens.

But Radley Cinemas picked up the win by rolling the dice on Moonlight to fill almost all of his lineup. Thanks to the doubling of its theater expansion, Moonlight earned enough extra cash to make it this week’s Best Performer, and with 1x Fantastic Beasts, also the Perfect Cinema.

Fall 2016 Fantasy Movie League – Week 11 Recap

If you noticed Veteran’s Day fell on a Friday, you might have also predicted that Hacksaw Ridge might see an increase in business, an increase that made it the Best Performer this week, thus adding a $2m bonus per screen. Four teams took advantage of this, but Radley Cinemas‘ lineup included Trolls, which saw a modest drop from last week’s box office, giving him his fifth win of the season.

We’re two weeks away from crowning a winner for the Nerdy. Will Radley Cinemas maintain the lead or will ColoRadJoe or Jason’s Farthouse Cineplex mount a comeback? Will Movies After Ass ever post a new lineup? Fantastic Beasts is going to do huge business, an thus an expensive play, so will it be worth including in lineups? If not, sorting through many of this week’s mid-range options might be the deciding play of the season. No pressure. #allthepressure

FML Fall Week 11

Fall 2016 Fantasy Movie League – Week 10 Recap

What a ‘strange’ week. Who knew people wanted to see trolls half as much as Marvel’s newest film? Three teams guessed well but ColoRadJoe guessed spot on and picked up the season’s first Perfect Cinema which carries a $5 million bonus. This win also practically eroded Radley Cinemas‘ massive lead which sent him crying into the corner. PeterParker played his best hand of the season, narrowly edging-out Jason’s Farthouse Cineplex.

Next week sees the ‘arrival’ of another slate of multiple releases that should make finding that Perfect Cinema even more elusive.

Fall 2016 Fantasy Movie League – Week 9 Recap

Now there are only 4 weeks left in this season now, and Madea has once again surprised everyone as the back-to-back weekend champion over newcomer, Inferno. We had two choices for Halloween-themed films this year, and apparently America wanted to laugh (laugh?) more than shiver. A couple teams picked up on this and, while Radley Cinemas took the top lineup, Doctor Acula’s Movie Funhouse posted his best week of the season, coming in second place just barely above Tyler Perry’s A Medea Cineplex who redeemed himself by loading up on his namesake to place third. Ouija 2 and Jack Reacher 2 let everyone else down. No one had this week’s BP, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, in their lineup, but we’ll all take Diwali seriously now won’t we?

FML Fall Week 9

Fall 2016 Fantasy Movie League – Week 8 Recap

People still really like those Madea movies as Boo! way over-performed, giving a couple teams some of their highest grosses ever! It’s surprising that, of all our teams, Tyler Perry’s A Madea Cineplex didn’t go all in on it. The Perfect Cinema this week was 4x Boo! 3x Storks and 1x Sully. Those damn Storks. They under-perform when you play them and over-perform when you don’t. And thus, no teams achieved the PC. But three came close, as Radley Cinemas and Jason’s Farthouse Cineplex both picked the same winning lineup. However, apparently, Jason’s Farthouse Cineplex claimed the official win because he locked in his lineup sooner. Which is fine. He can claim the title of the one so cocksure Boo! would be a hit while I fiddled with overloading Ouija or The Accountant but acquiescing to Boo! until the very last minute.

Next week will be tough. There are a lot of holdovers in the same value range and who knows what audience Inferno still has after all these years. Choose wisely.

Fall 2016 Fantasy Movie League – Week 7 Recap

This week, many teams put a lot of stock in Max Steel, which tanked hard, or Kevin Hart’s What Now?, while The Accountant over-performed, making this week’s Perfect Cinema 2x The Accountant, 3x Middle School, and 3x Don’t Breathe. Radley Cinemas came the closest to that combo and picked up his third win of the season.

This week also saw the debut of The Nerdy, our league trophy! All hail the Nerdy!
