Reel Gamers Review: Ducktales Remastered (PS3)

duckremastI have been a video game fan for many years. I remember my father buying my brothers and I a Nintendo for Christmas and my video game love was sealed forever. As we accumulated more games I found myself drawn to action platformers. Mega Man was and still is one of my most favorite series. I knew enough about video games that  when I was younger and saw the Capcom logo I would most likely love the game, and one of my favorite games of all time was Ducktales. When I heard that they were remaking it with slick HD graphics I couldn’t be more excited, and now that I have played and beaten Ducktales: Remastered I can say that Wayforward not only captured the greatness of the original but made a game that all HD remakes should strive to be.

duckremast1Fans of the original Ducktales cartoon will be immediately excited when they fire up Ducktales: Remastered. The classic theme music starts and so too does your adventure. The game starts with the dastardly Beagle Boys robbing Scrooge’s money! This is where you take control of the penny pincher. The controls are exactly how you remember them. Scrooge uses his cane not only as a way to jump higher but also as a weapon to jump on the heads of enemies. The first level of the game is a somewhat tutorial level that is new to the remake. It gives you a good idea of how to use Scrooge and his pogo stick effectively. After the short level you are taken to Scrooge’s money bin. He and his nephews are going on an adventure around the world to find treasures. You can choose any of the 5 levels, which gives the game a Mega Man feel. Some levels are very difficult and to offset this Wayforward lets you adjust the difficulty, which on the lower settings makes it easier to use your pogo stick and also a map to find your way through the level since it is non-linear. I never tried the lower difficulties but they are available and the game can be tough so if you are a newbie to the game you might want to try it on a lower difficulty.

duckremast2The graphics are amazing. It looks even better then the cartoon you remember. All the characters have fluid and expressive animation (you can also seek the help of an expert from 3d animation companies to get your projects animated ). The game is in the classic 2D style side scroller, but the backgrounds are beautiful, each world is unique and offers something different. The Alps have snow and Bubba the Caveduck, The Moon features aliens and Gizmo-Duck. All the characters have been drawn with love, from the main characters to the slugs.

The sound is also fantastic. The music has been redone, but it is bouncy and catchy. All the levels have the foundation of the music from the original game but of course we are not dealing with 8-bit beeps, it is a full on orchestra. But my favorite part hands down is the developers got the original cast to reprise their roles and it’s like putting on an old pair of jeans. I was beyond joy when Huey, Dewey, and Louie say “Unca Scrooge!” The game also now features a story with completely spoken dialogue that weaves all of the levels together even though you can choose any order you want to play.

Controls are very important in a game when it requires precise jumping and hoping. Thankfully Ducktales is a breeze to control. Again if you seem to be having trouble controlling your bounces you can adjust the difficulty to help you fully enjoy the game.

Ducktales: Remastered is an old school players dream come true. It takes what made the original so great and improves upon it. The graphics are amazing, music and voice work stupendous, and controls like butter. All the levels are expanded and are full of secrets. There is even an added last level. With lots of goodies to unlock you will be playing this game again and again, well done Wayforward. Ducktales fans rejoice you now have a new way to enjoy your favorite globe trotting treasure hunter.

Reel Gamers Review: LEGO: Marvel Super Heroes (PS3)

legomarvLEGO: Marvel Super Heroes is the latest in Traveller’s Tales extremely popular LEGO franchise.  I have never played a LEGO game before this and  after playing this game I can’t wait to try another one. If you are a fan of Marvel comics you must play this game, it has over 100 characters and lots of hidden easter eggs sprinkled throughout you adventure.

Marvel Superheroes opens with a being heading towards Earth and eating everything in it’s way, of course if you a comic fan you know right away that this is Galactus, and if you need further proof the Silver Surfer soon zooms across the screen. They set their eyes on Earth and as the Surfer makes it to Earth he drops a cosmic block that the villains want very badly, so it’s up to the heroes to stop them.

The game is a blast to play as each hero/villain is unique. Traveller’s did a great job capturing each of the characters abilities and personalities. One cool touch is you are guided by none other then Agent Coulson, and Clark Gregg is back!

What really stood out to me was how cool the developers made the LEGO world. The world is completely destructible and you will want to destroy it, the more LEGO coins you collect will unlock gold blocks at the end of each level. Speaking of collecting gold blocks in every level, Stan Lee is trapped and it’s up to you to rescue him! Nothing makes me smile more then hearing Stan Lee say “Thanks, true believer!” These are just a sample of the diversions that you have in every level of the game, you still have the objective of stopping villains and saving the world. Each villain has a unique way of being defeated and some like Sandman are showstoppers.

The graphics are very well done, it is lots of fun seeing some of your favorite characters LEGO-ized. The big characters like Hulk, fit right in. The levels are painstakingly detailed with lots of paths and each have a unique look, whether you are in OScorp tower or on Asgard each world has been given some TLC.

The controls are tight for the most part, especially given the diversity of all the characters. The game is basically a brawler with some minor puzzles sprinkled throughout. And while the jumping and punching are well done the flying at times can be a little wonky. But the biggest gripe is that the same button that switches between heroes is the same button that unleashes some characters special abilities so sometimes you will find yourself switching a character when you wanted to use their special powers.

LEGO_Marvel_Super_Heroes_CastThe game will have you playing it for hours after you’ve beaten it. You must revisit levels and areas with characters that you’ve unlocked because not all of the areas are available to you during your first play through. Plus you want to make sure you save Stan Lee right? LEGO: Marvel Super Heroes is everything a Marvel fan could want, a fun story, lots of cool characters and a ton of unlockables. Bursting with charm and comic love LEGO: Marvel Super Heroes is a comic fans dream.

Graphics 4.5

The game looks really good and seeing your favorite heroes as LEGO’s is a blast

Controls 4.o

If it wasn’t for the decision to use the triangle button for two functions this would be higher

Sound 5.0

The voice acting is great and Traveller’s Tales did a great job capturing the sounds of the super heroes, the score is epic as well

Fun Factor 5.0

LEGO: Marvel Super Heroes is a blast to play and to continue playing after you beat it

Reel Gamers Review: Tomb Raider (PS3)

tomb2

The original Tomb Raider debuted on Playstation in 1996, and boy have video games changed for the better. Of all the video game characters that needed an upgrade Lara Croft might have needed it the most. The biggest selling point of the original game was Ms. Croft’s unbelievable *ahem* assets. This new Tomb Raider takes what you know about Lara and turns it on it’s head. Gone are horrible controls and an even worse camera angles, this game is full of amazing graphics, tight controls, and a Lara Croft that learns to be tough and self reliant.

Tomb Raider takes gamers on basically an origin tale of Lara becoming a Tomb Raider. Lara and several of her friends are on a journey to a mysterious island that holds many secrets. In a tale that owes a lot to the Uncharted series, where nothing is what it seems. Tomb Raider starts with a bang dropping players into several intense action sequences. Lara is beat up and hurt and worst for wear after the boat she’s on wrecks and sinks. Separated from her colleagues Lara fights her way back to them.tomb-raider-2013-screenshot-3 On the way Lara meets other people that are trapped on the island and they are not friendly. One of my favorite moments in the game is when Lara is forced to kill them and how great this moment is handled. Throughout the game I still felt guilty about killing people, just like Lara. As the story progresses I found myself just engrossed in Lara’s journey and I did not want it to end.

The graphics are absolutely stunning. Lara looks beautiful and strong. The game also has some sweet effects, when it rains rain drops hit the screen and slid down as if we are watching this game through a camera that’s really there. Not only does water trickle down the screen but so too does snow, blood, and sparks from explosions. The lighting effects are also amazing, I loved the way this game looked every nook and cranny is beautifully realized.

The controls are super tight and precise. This is needed in game like this where perfect timing in jumping is crucial. You must traverse hostile terrain where ledges and branches break without warning. The weapon controls are spot on as well. Although Lara doesn’t like to kill she sure knows how to use weapons. She needs them too because not only does she have to deal with crazy “locals” but also wildlife. Yes, hunting is an important part of this game and by hunting you are rewarded with HP and skills.tmbradierdeer Almost everything on this game is top notch. Story, production value, but I think one best things this game has going for it is Camilla Luddinton’s performance as Lara Croft. You believe everything that she says and feel the heartbreak everytime she loses someone close to her. As far as Tomb Raiding it’s optional in the game. Now don’t freak out it’s still fun and there are a lot of tombs to discover. After you beat the game you are free to explore the island without the story pushing you in a direction and it is lots of fun. Trust me you will want to play this game after you beat it because there is so much to do and lots that you missed the first go around. The only blemish in the game is the multi-player is just alright. It’s bad, it’s just not that great either. It is fun but unnecessary.

This is a very welcome return. Lara Croft is back and kicks so much more ass then she did before.

Here are the ratings for Tomb Raider:(These are the old Gamepro magazine ratings, I loved this magazine when I was little and it hasn’t been published for over year so I’m bringing it back! Brad is working on something that will look better, here is a sample of how they looked when I was growing up)
