Reel Review: To Die Is Hard

todieishardThe Reel Nerds have had the pleasure of interviewing director Glenn Berggoetz about his most recent movie, Midget Zombie Takeover, and in the process he mentioned that he was a fan of Leslie Nielsen and he made a spoof of Die Hard called To Die Is Hard. Right away I was excited to see this movie. I love spoof movies and when we saw Zombie Takeover and he had To Die Is Hard I knew I had to get a copy. And it did not disappoint.

The movie starts with Mr. Berggoetz suiting up, as Joe McCann a no nonsense English professor, who everyone loves. His wife can’t get over how hot he is, and his daughter just beams with admiration. The tone of the movie is set very early as on his way to work Joe is listening to a song which lyrics describing  how awesome he is, and at the end of the song he declares “I am awesome.”

In Joe’s office he is grading and helping a female student who is also in love with McCann. He tells a story of how he placed 3rd in co-ed softball, and shows off the trophy that he is really proud of. Great Easter egg gag on McCann’s desk is a super sexy picture of himself, yes he love himself as much as everyone else. Terrorists strike his University and only Joe McCann can stop them! He is the most terrifying adversary of all time “a pissed off English professor!”

berggoetzA spoof movie either succeeds or fails on the lead actor and Glenn Berggoetz shines throughout. He plays McCann with the right amount of gruffness and his ability to deliver silly dialogue and believe it is not easy but he pulls it off. His love for the Naked Gun and Leslie Nielsen shines all over this movie. From a physical and comedic delivery Berggoetz is in top form. The movie moves by briskly and doesn’t linger on jokes, you have to watch it more then once to catch them all and a tribute to Bergoettz the writer for being able to squeeze so many jokes into the dialogue. The music is also pretty good, gloriously over the top at times and delivers the right mood.

The biggest drawback in the movie is that not all the performances are as good as Berggoetz, where he understands the spoof genre not everyone in the cast does. It’s not about being over the top, the dialogue and the situations already are, you have to play it straight. Greg Nemer as Detective Al Stimpson doesn’t understand that and comes across as annoying.

If you like spoof movies there’s a good chance that you will like To Die Is Hard. Glenn Berggoetz crafted a fun spoof of Die Hard and Naked Gun. Make sure you check out our interview with Glenn, and if Zombie Midget Takeover is playing in your town check it out, it too is a good time.

Brutality! Jason’s Top Ten Hits(kills)

friday-the-13-6

Jason is my favorite movie monster. Tonight I was watching an old classic, Friday the 13th Part 2 and it got me reminiscing of my favorite Jason hits, yes it’s macabre,  but hey it’s fun. So let’s jump into the bloodbath that Jason has left and see what are his 10 best disembowelments.

10. Vera, Friday the 13th Part 3(1982)

jasonspeargunkillJason wore a bag over his head in Part 2. He needed an identity. He found it when practical joker Shelly tried scaring his friends with a hockey mask and a spear gun(why? not sure). But after Vera yells at him he sulks away. Jason finds the mask and the spear gun and shoots Vera in the eye with it. From this moment on, a horror icon is born.

9. Mark, Friday the 13th Part 2(1981)

wheelmarkJason puts a rest to the myth that he only kills teenagers who are engaging in premarital sex and do drugs. Yes, Mark was on his way to maybe have sex and he did smoke some weed, but he was just sitting(hey-ho!) there when he took a machete to the face, and if that’s not horrible enough the force of the blow causes him to roll down the stairs, this is a shocking kill.

8. Officer Bracke, Friday the 13th (2009)

still-friday-the-13th-2009Finally! The partying kids call the cops after they discover they are being picked off one by one. Officer Bracke knocks on the door and tells the kids that he is an officer. As they go to open the door Jason appears behind the officer and jams a poker through his eyeball and the door, guess he should’ve called for back up.

7. Freddy Krueger, Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

fvjAn epic battle between two of horrors most notorious killers ends with Freddy’s severed arm being plunged through his back and bursting out of his chest. Yes Lori chopped off Krueger’s head but Jason all but killed him so it was an easy decap.

6. Rick, Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)

rick3Jason squeezes Rick’s head so hard his eyeball literally pops out of his head. This is the reason 3d movies were made. The sound effects are equally awesome.

5. Adrienne, Jason X (2002)facesmashJason is frozen and awakes in the future. The doctor examining him has liquid nitrogen in a sink nearby so after Jason gets up he dunks her face in it then smashes it into the table.

4. Julius, Friday the 13th Part 8(1989)

Jason Takes Manhattan Boxer

Julius is a star athlete and he decides he can knock Jason out. He hammers away on Jason and the killer is stumbling. But Julius cannot finish Jason off. He taunts Jason to give him his best shot. Jason does, he punches his head right off.

3. Sheriff Garris, Friday the 13th Part 6(1986)

f136Sheriff Garris finds out about Jason too late. He arrives at Camp Forrest Green to rescue the campers. When he makes sure the children are safe he hides from Jason. But when Jason sets his sights on his daughter Garris springs into action. He manages to land a few blows, but Jason grabs him around the shoulders and bends him in half.

2. Trey, Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

freddy-vs-jason-bed-killDon’t be a douche. Trey treats his girlfriend like crap and forces her to take a shower after they have sex. While she is in the shower Jason stabs him repeatedly and then grabs the ends of the bed and folds it in half.

1. Judy, Friday the 13th Part 7 (1988)

f137If you are a fan of Friday the 13th, then you already knew this one was coming. Jason drags Judy out of her tent and swings her like a baseball bat and cracks her against a tree. It’s simple and brutal.

Bonus Kill! Mile High Horror 2012

Reel Nerds Shirts are coming to Denver Comic Con!

Denver Comic Con is coming up and we’re printing our own shirts to celebrate! This opportunity is for a very limited time. Shirt orders will only be accepted through Tuesday May 14th so donate now!

reelnerds_dcc2013_shirt2The art is a piece we commissioned last year at Denver Comic Con from artist Terence Brown. He did an amazing  job capturing our most heroic qualities and now Brad has designed a really cool shirt that we want to share with you.

We’re taking donations to support and improve the show you love so much. All proceeds, which are marginal at best, will go to upgrading our recording equipment. Mostly we just want an opportunity for you to own a little piece of our show.

A donation of $15 earns you:

A T-Shirt and a couple stickers. Plus you’ll get an additional entry into each of the prizes we’ll be raffling off at DCC, increasing your chances to win the awesome prizes we’ve got lined up, which will include limited edition comics, signed books, and more.

A donation of $25 or more earns you:

A T-Shirt, stickers, entry into our DCC raffles,  a custom Reel Nerds Poster personally signed by us, a random movie poster that’s been personally defaced by us, a DVD of no guaranteed quality (the earliest donors will get the best of James’ Shit Show Collection like 2-Headed Shark Attack), you’ll be personally thanked on the show as well as at our booth at DCC, plus you’ll get any other random stuff we might decide to throw into the box.

All shirts and rewards will be available for pickup at Denver Comic Con. Anyone so unfortunate that they can’t attend DCC will have their rewards mailed to them. Shipping and Handling will be free, but make sure that your address is accurate when you donate or leave your preferred shipping address as a comment.

Shirts will be available in Men’s sizes: S, M, L, XL, and XXL and in Ladies sizes: WS, WM, WL, WXL, and WXXL. There is a place along with your donation for you to tell us what size you need. If sizing options change, like women’s sizes aren’t available or XXXLs become available we will contact you and allow you to change your order.

Thank you so much for your support. Even if you can’t donate now or think our shirt looks stupid we are so thankful that you are even listening. Especially at times like this when we are constantly working on content for the show, not just the podcast but commentaries, the upcoming webseries, and all the fun stuff we have planned for DCC this year it’s our fans that keep us working hard. Again, we want you to know that we aren’t looking to make money with this, all donations go to covering the cost of the shirts as well as upgrading our show to make it more enjoyable for our listeners, not a single cent goes to us.

If you have questions, special requests, or would like to donate through a method other than Paypal email us at Reelnerds@gmail.com or message us on Facebook or Twitter.

Rod Stewart in Film

rod-stewart-troubadour-2-650-430It’s no secret that Rod Stewart is my favorite singer. I can remember the first time I saw him perform on video, it was his 1985 Concert Video and when he strutted across the stage singing “Infatuation”I was hooked. With his new album being released on May 7th I thought it would be fun to share some of the movies that he has contributed songs to, from the well known to some hidden gems. Also I will tell which movie you can watch and see a Rod cameo, so let’s get rocking!

Rod Stewart has been performing since the 60’s, so it’s no surprise that he has contributed to over 90 films’ soundtracks. The first song he recorded that did not appear on an album for a movie was a cover of the Beatles’ “Get Back” which he recorded for the documentary “All This and World War II”. It’s a fun cover but it and the movie never really caught on. “Private Lessons”, in 1981 featured 3 Stewart songs and was a modest hit. It wasn’t until 1982 when Rod finally recorded a song written for him and was the featured song on a soundtrack. The movie was “Night Shift” and the song was “That’s What Friends Are For”. Although Rod’s version didn’t make waves, this Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager penned tune went on to be a huge hit for Dionne Warwick and friends as a charity single for AIDS research.

Stewart next scored a top ten hit with the somewhat silly but unbelievably catchy “Love Touch”, from the 1986 film “Legal Eagles”. Rod has said he will never sing this song live as it is a terrible song and the lyrics are too silly to sing. And yes the song is silly but I think it’s pretty fun, and hey look how much the fun the extras in the video are having.

Next up is one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, 1987’s Innerspace. Rod Stewart has always been a huge fan of Sam Cooke, and has covered him multiple times. On this soundtrack he rerecorded “Twistin’ The Night Away” that he first recorded in 1972 on the album “Never A Dull Moment”. For the ‘Innerspace” soundtrack he updated the sound and changed the tempo and danced with the films star in this really cool video. One of my favorites.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYO_ptkQsOo&playnext=1&list=PL1E7F15BD4B9161AA

My favorite actor is Robert Downey Jr. My favorite singer is Rod Stewart. Put them together, magic. Rod’s great 1988 song “Forever Young” is featured in the fantasy comedy “Chances Are”. 1993’s “So I Married an Axe Murderer” doesn’t really feature Rod Stewart, but it stars Mike Myers in several roles. including the father of Charlie also played by Myers named Stuart. Stuart is a fun loving Scot who loves Rod Stewart and sings his songs loudly and incorrectly whenever he is drunk or drinking, lots of fun.

Rod scored a number 1 hit with fellow rockers Sting and Brian Adams on “All For Love” off the soundtrack for Disney’s “The Three Musketeers”. The movie is lots of fun and so too is the song.

Rod had more catalog songs appear on soundtracks over the next 5 years but it wasn’t until 1998’s Patch Adams when he recorded a song for a soundtrack, “Faith of the Heart” fits the movie and is perfect for Stewart’s soulful voice but it like the movie is a little candy coated. Still it is a fun catchy song. (this is not a real video for the song but it’s well done.)

“Faith of the Heart” would be the last song Stewart would record for a movie but he would still have songs featured in movies, here are some of the highlights:

“Almost Famous” features “Every Picture Tells a Story”

“The Perfect Storm” features “Rhythm of My Heart”

“Charlie’s Angels” features “Angel” which  Rod started to include in some of his concerts after it’s release.

The video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas inlcudes “Young Turks”

“Invincible” features “Mandolin Wind”

“Halloween II” the remake features “I Know I’m Losing You”. It is used very effectively in this movie, it’s really haunting.

“Due Date” features  Rod’s hidden gem take on “Amazing Grace” and it is really powerful .

And last but not least Rod makes a cameo as Lucy Liu’s date in the boxing comedy “Play It To The Bone”

Also you should pick up Rod Stewart’s new album “Time” on May 7th, here is the official video for the song “It’s Over”

or maybe you like your songs upbeat, here’s another off “Time” the catchy “She Makes Me Happy”
